Flickr Umbrella

The Pileus System is a mobile tangible browser to make rainy days fun. The system is constructed by the Pileus Umbrella and the Pileus WebService. User can see and take a photo and video with the PileusUmbrella. User can hand on own experience in rainy day to next user with an umbrella type photoset. User Connects the Grip with the Screen, then the Grip reads the Screen’s ID and login to own Pileus Account. When user takes photos or videos, Pileus WebService evaluates media-type of data and uploads it to Flickr or YouTube, and then set a tag by screen ID. In addition, user twists the grip, it searchs contents at Flickr and YouTube by tag of screen ID, and displays contents in order.

Google Test

(Editor’s note: Entrepreneur William Jolitz posits a contrarian view on YouTube, praising its expensive use of bandwidth as a key to its sucess. Read on about how YouTube meets the “Google Test.”)

So in looking at Google and now YouTube, maybe the question isn’t one of obsessing over bandwidth costs – great engineers like Wayne get there eventually. Instead we should ask how can we drive revenue sources by driving tons of content like Google and YouTube do? How much you displace in the ad space (Google) or TV (YouTube) is more important than what you displace it with.

Stats about Venture capital investments into “Web 2.0″ 金曜日, 9月 22 2006

Venture capital investments into “Web 2.0″ Internet companies this year are on track to double last year’s levels to about $500 million, according to a new report on the bubbling sector.

Companies included in this study have a business model that revolves around a dynamic interface facilitating participation through such methods as user-created content, networking, and collaboration. Applications used include podcasting, tagging, blogs, social networking, mashups, and wikis. Technologies used in these applications include: AJAX, RSS, SOA, CSS, XHTML, Atom, and rich Internet applications.

Web 2.0 is a relatively small portion of the market. A total of $13 billion was invested in 1,213 U.S. venture-backed companies in the first half of this year. The deal size per company remains small too: The median size of a Web 2.0 financing round this year is $4.4 million, compared to $7.5 million for a venture financing overall.

More than half the companies (25) receiving investments in 2006 were generating revenue, including three which were identified as profitable.None of the financings in 2005 went to profitable companies.

None of the venture-backed Web 2.0 companies have achieved an IPO to date, and fewer than 10 have been acquired, including such companies as del.icio.us and MySpace, the report said.As a result, the majority of Web 2.0 companies aren’t getting the great valuations you’d assume they are, from all the hype you hear these days.

For example, the median pre-money valuation for a Web 2.0 company this year is $5 million, but the median pre-money valuation for the median venture-backed company is $20 million, so far this year, according to the survey.
